I thought that there is absolutely no quizzing here in the USA. But I found out that there is something called the National Trivia Association that conducts quizzes throughout America. But quizzing here is a lot different than quizzing back home. There no such things as 'college level' quizzes. The quizzes (or trivia) as these people call it, are held in pubs, restaurants and bars...
I went to one such restaurant where NTA had organized a quiz. The questions were ok, but mostly fact based. Most of them were related to the US (history, people etc) which I found pretty tough..But I managed to find an American team-mate and we managed a humble tenth place amongst 30 odd teams.

Quizzes at IIM Bangalore

They say that Bangalore is the intellectual capital of the country. Justice was made to this fact by two stunning and highly entertaining quizzes at the Indian Institute of Management this weekend. The first quiz was simply titled "the Corporate Quiz". The quiz was only for corporates. This was my first ever foray into an out and out corporate quiz. Our team sounded like a formidable one (Oracle + Texas Instruments) but didn't live up to its name! LOL!!! The quizmaster was Mitesh Agarwal, popularly known as the practising quizmaster(remember, he won the ACM Bangalore quiz last week). The prelims were absolutely fantastic...TQC Style workoutable questions. But the final was a lot geeky and meant for pure bred corporate quizzers. I was left absolutely clueless in most questions. There were 30 questions in the prelims with 19 as the cutoff. We got something around 13.

The second quiz was titled, "Bizarre", an Open Business Quiz organized by Derek O'Brien and Associates and conducted by Derek himself. Derek is a strict guy and very specific about his rules. The quiz started bang on time. Unfortunately, Derek did not allow me to participate competitively (even though i pleaded to him personally)since I was late by 5 minutes and I did not possess 2 other team-mates. Anyway, I spent my time enjoying the quiz as a third person and it was one hell of an experience. The quiz was absolutely fantastic! The best thing about the O'Briens' quizzes are that they are totally logical. These guys focus on common sense more rather than out and out thoroughbred knowledge. And that is what I like about them. Quizzing needs to transform from a geeky activity to a fun activity. I hope we manage to produce more like the O'Briens who can take this form of popular quizzing to the masses.

Judging from a purely cognitive point of view, the entire quiz was damn easy. But the questions were damn tricky as well. After attending the entire quiz, I was sure as hell that if team Blitzkrieg had participated in this quiz, it could have easily come 2nd or 3rd. (and won ourselves a few lenovo laptops and some 70k prize money :) ). The finals were conducted at the amphitheater and Derek was at his scintillating best. The quiz was amazing fun. (I am repeating this again and again to give justice to this event :D). I really enjoyed the parts when Derek snubbed those ultra-geeky quizzers on stage who wanted to boast off their knowledge by saying stupidly weird things when the answer was oh-so-simple.

Quizzing is not all about asking questions and answering them. It's also about entertainment, fun and something which everyone can enjoy...

ACM Bangalore Computer Quiz 2010

Quizzing is indeed one of my passions. I justified this fact by finding for myself a quiz in my very first days at Bangalore :). It was the inaugural ACM Bangalore Computer quiz. They plan to hold it annually now. Thinking that computer quizzes were my forte, I went to the Taj Residency(another reason for attending the quiz) to take part in this quiz. However, the level of the quiz proved to be way over my head. In fact, I had just managed to get 2 questions correct in the 20 question prelims (the cutoff was 10). However, the final round proved to be relatively easier and I knew the answers for quite a few questions. It was an open quiz. He was planning to move to New York to study in college on a sports scholarship and pursue his dream to win an Olympic medal for athletics. In the end A decided to give up his education and go along with the band. C's parents were against their son's throwing away a solid and promising career and joining the band. The manager set about trying to get a deal with a good record company but it would take many rejection letters before the boys would be signed. In 1994 E and C were involved in a nearly fatal car crash, but luckily both survived without serious injuries.

Today we had went to attend a quiz called Inquizitive (the name is being copied by everyone everywhere!!! the original inquizitive was the ultra-super quiz organized by Hindustan Times..hosted by Siddharth Basu)...The organizers were very enthusiastic...i really appreciate the fact they read this blog and i shall not hurl abuses at them for wasting so much time in setting up the projector and also their audi sucked and there werent any tables on the stage; because they mite read be reading this post this very moment... :)

On serious note the UIET guys did a fantastic job in getting the Kutub Quizzers to Chandigarh....
was a really gud quiz..in fact the quality of questions was really superb. Kutub Quizzers again proving tht they r a superb organization...after a long time we had attended such a quality quiz....

Had it been a three member quiz...it wud have been better...coz again Ashu was left with no team-mate...I feel really sad at the fact tht Ashu had to attend the quiz again with very little chance of qualification...mayb nxt time onwards we shud do a rotation policy like the Aussies....

The prelims were really gud and me&Udit topped in the prelims...none of the othr teams from TQC could make it...they just missed by a whisker....thr wer two teams from BITS Pilani on the stage....they mite hav thought they wud easily win in Chandigarh but they didnt realize tht teams from Thapar were formidable. we gave them a gud fight but we finished third behind the two BITS Teams by just 10 points...

Being the first team to qualify we wer given the choice to choose any seat on the stage..we took the 2nd one. The two BITS teams surrounded us..(was tht planned ;) ) ...and hence it was very difficult to get the pass questions from either side coz the BITS guys wud answer them correctly...they were imba gud teams and deserved to win...however had we been sitting next to one of the Chandigarh teams...things mite have been different!!!

The elite members of the TQC went to the Punjab Engineering College to attend the Eureka..a quiz held during their fest...Although the organizers(students of PEC) did their best..the quiz sucked big time...

it was hosted by a person called gautam ghosh...CEO of Grey Cells ltd...
looks like these days...almost anyone can open a company....

the host lacked communication skills...lacked the quizzing aura....asked stupid questions....cracked silly PJs....pronounced prelims as 'eelims'.

the prelims sucked so much..that the highest team got 6 and the cut off was 5...(that is out of 25 questions!!!)...the finals had lesser number of questions than the prelims...we were called on the stage and along with four other teams we were asked to step down coz the organizers did a huge blunder in the calculations...

the quizmaster brought files in an unknown format...so he had no idea as to how to run them...we cudnt hear the audio questions...coz the bhangra guys were playing their music in the background(or shud i say foreground)...

the quizmaster and the laptop operator wer such noobs....the answer to each question was on the slide succeeding the question...so wen the powerpoint file was opened...one cud see all the questions and all the answers in the slide gallery on the left of the screen...

all in all it was a waste of time....

Proness in IIT Roorkee

I would like to state here that the Thapar Quiz Club is official!!!(since we now have our official logo :)))

The elite members of the TQC went to IIT Roorkee to take part in their quizzes...We ended up winning in every event we participated in...except the quizzing events (sadness....)

The first quiz : Comfortably Dumb...was a boring quiz....the questions were interesting but they were loooong....the A/V system sucked and basically even after qualifying we managed to doze off in the quiz....the quiz was hosted by a geeky 4th yr guy...who actually ended up winning the third quiz....

Team Blitzkrieg(our standard pro 3 member team - me,ashu and udit) and the team of Maithani,Gippy and Smile qualified....

The second quiz: MMS (music movies and sports...)
This was our speciality quiz....we qualified easily but got raped in the finals coz we sucked at the hugely high scoring connect rounds...

The third quiz : Titans of Trivia...
This was an ulitmate pro-quiz conducted by the winner of the Nat Geo Genius (Dr.Bhattacharya) and also the member of the Kutub quizzers...although the quiz was below par as compared to inQUIZitive...(maybe only Derek can host a quiz better than Barry)...the questions were fantastic.....after qualifying second...we took the joint lead in the middle of the quiz...but totally lost track after the start of the connect round....Eventually we came 5th or 6th....

The standard of quizzing at IIT Roorkee was very good....lets hope they come to TU and we beat them on our own backyard...
